This 2012 study developed and retrospectively evaluated an automated method for segmenting renal cortex in contrast-enhanced CT scans from kidney donors. The evaluation used 37 scans from 27 patients and compared automated segmentation with expert manual annotations.
Summary
Xinjian Chen, Ronald M. Summers, Monique Cho, Ulas Bagci and Jianhua Yao developed a three-dimensional automated method to segment the renal cortex in contrast-enhanced abdominal CT images. The retrospective evaluation used 37 arterial-phase CT datasets from 27 patients, including 10 patients scanned before and after nephrectomy. Automated segmentations were compared with expert manual segmentations using correlation and Bland–Altman analyses. The study reported agreement with manual assessments and shorter segmentation time; the authors noted the small sample size and called for validation in larger patient samples. Read the article.
