A 2009 study explored using geometric features of load-displacement curves to estimate when failure begins during multiple failure state triaxial tests of rock samples.
Summary
The study presents an approach for estimating the onset of failure in multiple failure state triaxial tests. It extracts curvature landmarks and invariant extensions from load-displacement curves using scale-based differential geometry. The abstract reports analysis of data from 165 cored samples spanning Norite, Granite, Limestone, Sandstone, Siltstone, Marble and Halite, and describes the estimates as having an “acceptable degree of accuracy.” The available abstract does not specify the evaluation procedure or quantify accuracy.
