This 2010 study examined how intensity variation affects medical image registration in MRI. Its systematic evaluations found that registration accuracy was influenced by intensity similarity as well as spatial and geometric similarity.
Summary
The study investigated whether intensity standardization—the process of mapping image intensities to a common scale so that similar values represent similar tissues—affects medical image registration. The authors evaluated registration using clinical MR images and reported nearly 20,000 registration experiments. Their quantitative and qualitative evaluations indicated that intensity variation between images reduced registration accuracy. The findings concern the registration evaluations described in this paper; they do not establish clinical readiness.
